  • The end of the school year

    Fri 23 Jul 2021

I cannot believe the school year has come to an end. We started in September with joy just to simply be back. This quickly turned back towards ‘lockdowns’ and then a closure period again. A remarkable effort by all of you to keep up with the remote learning is being felt now by the great progress children have made. Year 6 in particular leave us in really strong positions to start secondary school with high levels of independent problem solving skills, strong self-management and learning consistent with pre-COVID expectations.

It was wonderful to hear them share their own thoughts about their journey through our school this morning at their Leaver’s service and they will look forward to ringing the school bell as they leave and ‘ring’ their place into our school history.

  • Class 4 enjoyed Calshot Activity Centre

    Fri 16 Jul 2021

Class 4 children have been enjoying their residential visit to Calshot Activity Centre over the last few days. Somehow, the weather has turned warmer and brighter which really helped everyone enjoy themselves. The activities have been very exciting – Kayaking, indoor rock climbing and dry-ski slope skiing being highlights, but it is being away from home which is the key learning. Everyone has coped well and will have lots to talk about when they get home. My thanks to Miss Olver and Mrs Miller who do not get paid extra for this and without them volunteering, we couldn’t provide this opportunity!

  • Upham COVID measures will remain in place until further notice

    Fri 09 Jul 2021

There has been much talk this week of what it means for schools with the planned removal of COVID measures from July 19th. It would appear the need for bubbles will be lifted meaning September could look very different. We will plan for this as soon as detail, beyond the headlines, is published. For many children, we will need to re-teach the children school routines for playtime and lunch so we will not rush to do this for the last week of term, that’s disruptive for the sake of it, but will look towards September. It looks likely that a return to a shared home-time of 3.30pm will return though I’m sure you will agree this will be easier to start in September rather than the last week. More news over the next few weeks and over August.
Please note that in the meantime, the regulations that we have followed all term, still apply.

  • The different types of learning....

    Fri 02 Jul 2021

Learning comes in lots of ways – that’s one of the reasons we praise (and therefore encourage) different types of learning through our Friday certificates; thinking (cognitive learning), emotional learning, social learning and learning how to learn (metacognition and self-regulation). Year 6 have missed out on SATs exams this year and whilst there are many benefits to this, the emotional learning that goes with applying yourself to an exam context is an important piece of learning. Miss Olver has created an exam week for them next week, for no other purpose than to experience this emotional learning. Part of the process is also the learning that it is OK to be nervous about something like an exam. She is running Pilates sessions for them before school to help them see that they can do something proactive to manage these feelings too.
