  • As half-term draws to a close .......

    Fri 28 May 2021

As is often the case, as a half term comes to a close the topics children have been learning about also are drawn together. Class 1 have released the last of their froglets, having watched them grow from tadpoles whilst Class 2 have finished their plant sketching. Class 3 have been busy compiling data following their plant growth experiments – coke appears to have helped the plants growth though orange juice was less successful. Class 4 have used circuit components to create light sources, with some for lighthouses, nightlights and even a pet rabbit light. Curriculum time for this was blocked over a few days to really allow children to solve problems and sustain concentration.

  • Explorers at Hillier Gardens

    Fri 21 May 2021

Classes 2 and 3 had a great time on their school trip on Wednesday to Hillier Gardens. Though they were both learning about plant growth, they enjoyed different workshops throughout the day. Class 3 explored flowers and processes of seed dispersal – being able to see plants from all over the world really helped them understand the process. Class 2 were exploring how plants grow and the conditions they need. These experiences are hugely motivating and help to bring learning alive, it is great that we are able to return to this important aspect of our school curriculum.

Class 1 & 4 enjoyed the day too as they could use the whole school at playtime, without being restricted to bubbles-zones. For Class 1 this was their first experience of

  • Focusing on nature

    Fri 14 May 2021

This week is mental health week and we have supported this in school.  However, there is so much negative coverage around mental health in the media, children are likely to associate every mention with catastrophising events and effects.  We have therefore been very careful in the language used – that we all have times when our feelings are challenged or something causes us anxiety but most of the time we get through it and return back to a calmer place. We discussed the national theme this year of ‘nature’ as a way of helping yourself calm back to a more regulated state.  I challenged the children to try to notice something outside; to listen to the birds, explore the flowers, look for bugs or just enjoy the view and see if it helped. You might also be interested to know that our governors have recently reviewed our Mental Health and Wellbeing policy which can be found on our website together with lots of other information – under the ‘Our Curriculum’ tab look for the ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing’ page.

  • Don't forget your coat.....just in case

    Fri 07 May 2021

A wild week, weather wise – cold winds, hail and showers with spells of warm sunshine in between. Most of us have been cloud watching all week, hoping the looming dark clouds on the horizon miss us – and in the most part they have, the children have continued to play outside. It is a reminder though that children do need to be prepared for all weathers at the moment. We are not yet in the warm predictability of the summer; children will still need layers when there is a chilly breeze or rain forecast. We try to keep the children outside as much as we can to promote high physical activity. It is fine to stay outside in light rain, especially if it is just a shower, only heavier rain or strong winds will force us to come inside for a wet play.
