Governor Vacancies

Parent Governor Vacancy

One of our elected parent governors’ term of office is coming to an end on 18 February 2026.

The intention is to have the new parent Governor in place before the Full Governing Body training taking place in January.

Parent governors are welcomed as valued members of the team and play a vital role in ensuring the governing body is aware of the views of parents and the local community.   We feel sure that there are parents prepared to take on this important role and give their time and commitment to helping us to continue to improve the school's performance.

In looking to fill this vacancy the governors of the school have identified the following skills, experience and attributes that they feel would help strengthen the governing body:

  • Knowledge of HR
  • Safeguarding
  • Premises Management
  • Commitment to the education of all children
  • Willingness to engage with learning

Training and support will be available to help in the role.  This will include in-house mentoring and support, as well as access to external governor training.  For further information please also look at the information for prospective governors on the Hampshire Governor Services website.  Please note that for the protection of children all governor appointments are subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service Check and an identity check.

If you would like to find out more information we will be holding a drop-in information session on Wednesday 19th November between 14:45 and 15:40 in school.

Parent governors are elected by other parents at the school. Any parent, or carer, of a registered pupil at the school at the time of election is eligible to stand for election as a parent governor. Parent governors may continue to hold office until the end of their term of office even if their child leaves the school.

Schools must make every reasonable effort to fill parent governor vacancies through elections. However, the Regulations make provision for the governing body to appoint parent governors where not enough parents stand for election. Governing bodies may only appoint as a parent governor a parent who has, in their opinion, the skills to contribute to effective governance and the success of the school.

A person is disqualified from being a parent governor if they are an elected member of the Local Authority or paid to work at the school for more than 500 hours.

Reasons to volunteer

  • Help children fulfil their aspirations
  • Model the values of your community and make a difference to the lives of young people
  • Meet great new people and bring a fresh perspective to the work of the board
  • Develop new skills and knowledge with governor training

What governors do

A school’s governing body has three main functions.

  • To ensure that the school has a clear vision and direction
  • To hold the headteacher to account for the school’s performance
  • To make sure that the school’s money is well spent

Being a school governor means being interested in getting the best education for the pupils at the school. Governors can become involved in a range of school matters, which can include recruitment, finance and curriculum.

They also provide a strong link between the school and the local community, and an independent view to support the school on long term development and improvement.

Governance boards meet at least once per term, and governors are also expected to get to know their schools through visits. There are a range of training opportunities available to help governors undertake their duties and develop their understanding of the key areas of school management.
