Monday 8th June

Good morning Class Four and happy Monday!

I hope you all had a lovely weekend and are ready for another week of busy learning. My weekend seemed to fly by. On Saturday I went to the delivery office to pick up a parcel - it was some sample pieces of wooden laminate floor for my lounge. I think I've picked the one I like, so am hoping to order it to be delivered and fitted at the start of the Summer holidays, which is very exciting as I've just got manky old floorboards at the moment which are covered with stains and some nails sticking out! During the day I did some cleaning, food shopping and planned lots of your home learning. On Sunday, I went for a lovely long run with Mrs Pilgrim and then did some gardening and a bit more planning in the afternoon. I tried cooking a new meal - it was a chicken and gnocchi bake from a Joe Wicks book, it was delicious! Fortunately there's some left over so I can have it for my lunch tomorrow - yum!

This week I would like you to send me:

  • Your germs leaflet (silent writing)
  • Your creation art work
  • And anything else you would like to share with me and Mrs Soley smiley

Thank you to everyone who sent me your work last week - the comic strips were fantastic and it was great to read about what you got up to in half term. If you haven't emailed yet, please can you send me an email today.

Have a great day and keep up the good work, love Miss Olver x

Here is a message from Mrs Soley:

Welcome back to week 2 everybody,

I hope you are all well and enjoyed a happy weekend with your families.

We had a lovely start to our Saturday with a message from Hannah asking if we wanted to go for a walk around a pond local to her.  She arranged some coffee and cake and we met up.  It was very windy and quite chilly sat at the picnic table but the coffee helped a bit.  Jacob fell asleep straight away so we never got to see him properly.  He woke up as Hannah was putting him in the car so we briefly talked to him before we went our separate ways.

I spent some time on Saturday painting skirting boards in my son’s room.  Another job that we had put off until we had more time.  It needed doing though, I don’t think the last owners of the house had done it for a very long time especially as they had built bunk beds into that end of the room.

While we enjoyed our dinner, we watched Moana.  Hannah had messaged to say that her and Jacob were having a film night and that was what they were watching.  I had wanted to see this as I had heard the music was good and the animation so Mr Soley and I watched it on iPlayer while we were eating.  I’m very glad Hannah messaged because we both enjoyed the film very much.  I have included a photo of Hannah and Jacob and you can see he seems to be enjoying it too.

On Sunday, Mr Soley spent a bit of time in the garden in the morning planting out some flowers that we had delivered during the week.  They look a bit spindly now but hopefully when their roots get stronger, they will grow big and healthy.  I have included 2 photos of our new planting.

While he was doing this, I made some yummy flapjacks.  They included: apple, cranberries, dates, pistachios and coconut.  I cut them up smaller than the recipe said, that way they will last a bit longer – hopefully!

Again, we had a surprise message from Hannah inviting us to a picnic at Lakeside as she was intending to go there as the weather was ok.  We met her just after 12pm and found a nice curved bench to sit on so we could enjoy our lunch, we were able to include some of our flapjack.  Afterwards, we went for a walk around the lakes which was lovely as the sun was shining.  As you can see from my pictures we saw a lot of Canada Geese as well as a Grebe and a Coot (the one with a white dot on its head).  Jacob managed to see the birds but fell asleep as we were walking round, he had only had a short nap.

I hope you all enjoy the art and cooking activities I have planned this week.  For the cooking you will need: tortilla wraps, tomato puree and cheese as well as peppers, sweetcorn, olives, ham and any other pizza-type toppings you like.

Have a lovely week everybody, catch up with you on Friday.

Best wishes.

Mrs Soley xx

I really enjoyed the Flinstones session with Joe on Friday, although I did feel a bit silly doing all those 'Yabadabadoos'! I wonder what we will be doing today?

Maths

Year 5

Today you are going to be continuing with your work on fractions from last week. Go to the White Rose Maths Home Learning Year 5 website and find Summer Term Week 6, Lesson 1 which is called ‘Multiply Unit and Non-Unit Fractions by Integers’. Today I want you to focus on multiplying unit fractions by integers. Watch the first part of the video up to 5:10. Today I only want you to work through Pages 1 and 2 of the worksheet (you will be doing pages 3 and 4 tomorrow). I have attached the answers so you can check your work.

If you have enough time, or fancy an extra challenge, have a go at the extension sheet below. This has 3 problems on similar to the ones we call pink problems at the end of our maths sessions in class. I've also attached the answers so you can check your work.

Year 6

Today you are going to be continuing your work on decimals, fractions and percentages from last week. Go to the White Rose Maths Home Learning Year 6 website and find Summer Term Week 6, Lesson 4 which is called ‘Percentages of Amounts’. Watch the video and then complete the worksheet. I have attached the answers so you can check your work. I have also attached a document showing my workings for Questions 3 and 5 in case you find them tricky and want to see how I solved them.

If you have enough time, or want an extra challenge, have a go at one of the extension sheets below. Each sheet has five worded problems based on percentages of amounts. Option One is all one-step worded problems, whereas many of the problems in Option Two are multi-step. I have also attached the answers so you can check your work.

English

Remember to write an entry in your diary/journal at some point today.

Last week, in your topic work, you learnt about different types of germs. Because of the coronavirus, people have been talking a lot about different ways that you can keep yourself safe and healthy and avoid bad germs. On the news, you have probably seen lots about PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), including wearing masks if you are going on public transport, in the supermarket, or have to be close to someone from outside of your household for some reason. You are hopefully washing your hands now anytime you come back from going outside the house, after going to the toilet, before eating, after touching anything dirty… (although you should have been doing this anyway!!!). At home, your family probably clean the surfaces which are most used with anti-bacterial cleaning products. You might be using hand sanitiser when you are out and about or if you go to the supermarket. Social distancing is another way in which we can avoid bad germs as we are not touching or getting too close to other people.

For your silent writing this week, I would like you to produce a leaflet explaining to the reader about the four different types of bad germs and sharing information about how to keep safe from them.

Today, I would like you to plan your leaflet using the planning sheet below. I have put lots of questions and suggestions on this to prompt you through your planning. Tomorrow you will be writing your leaflet with time to finish off, check, edit and improve it on Wednesday.

I have put the Powerpoint from last week about Germs below, in case you want to go back and remind yourself about these.

RE

Today we are going to be continuing with our creation topic which we started last week. In today’s session we are going to look at the Christian Creation Story. Read through the excerpt from the Bible below.

Do you know which part of the Bible it has come from? Beginning, middle or end?

Which Testament is it from – old or new?

Do you know which book it is from?

The excerpt is taken from the first book in the Bible called Genesis, this is in the Old Testament. The excerpt describes what Christians believe happened when the Earth was created.

For today’s activity, I would like you to retell the Christian Creation Story, sharing your understanding of what happened on each day. You can choose how you do this, here are some options:

  • Create a story map using pictures and captions
  • Create a poster
  • Create a Powerpoint
  • Create a film
  • Write what happened on each day in paragraphs/bullet points

Spellings and Reading

Mrs Kimble has written you some more spelling sentences ready for your test on Friday. They are based on our animal topic and again focus on homophones (words which sound the same but are spelt differently). This week these are two/to/too, heard/herd and practise/practice. Start practising these today.

Then do some independent reading of your choice.
