Class 1

Welcome to Class 1 which is where Year R learn. It is a relatively compact space but it is more than big enough for the 15 children in the class. They have the main class area which has a large 'rug area' where children will sit to hear a story or for some input from their teacher. There are tables as well as lots of floor space to spread out and play with train tracks, horses, castles, cars or the variety of construction toys. Much of the provision is similar to that the children might know form preschool so they tend to feel very comfortable here.

Their cloakrooms and toilet cubicles are joined to the class space and they are the only children who use them. This means they are very close - young children tend not to be perfect at judging the time needed to get to the toilet so the closer the better! The children also feel happy and secure, knowing that other children they do not know will not suddenly be using them.
Just like at preschool, the children have access to an outside play area. This has a covered area so that even in the rain, they can still get outside if they ant to. Children can choose whether to take their learning inside or outside. The bigger construction toys are outside, along with the water table and sand trays - always popular! The children will also use bikes, scooters and trucks and use the playground and the network of paths (which double nicely as 'roads') around the school.
