Wednesday 29th April

Good morning Class Four - I can't believe it's Wednesday already, this week is going really quickly!

I hope you had a good day yesterday despite the horrible weather. I hope you enjoyed reading the Greek myths yesterday afternoon - I had an email with a lovely piece of artwork responding to it (see below) and a video of someone retelling it with their cuddly toys which was brilliant (but I can't share that one with you due to technology troubles!!!). If you did something that you're proud of, remember that you can always email it to me smiley

I spent the day in school yesterday - I had a lovely day, I was on with Mrs Lambert and Mr Woolley so it was nice to see them and catch up as well as help the children with their learning and watch them play. It was a very wet day so we didn't get outside much which was a shame though. Flash and Fred were very pleased to see me when I got home and we had lots of cuddles!

I hope you have a great day today - Mrs Soley has planned a lovely art activity for you this afternoon so I really hope you have lots of fun doing it.

Love Miss Olver x

Here is a message from Mrs Soley:

Happy Wednesday everyone,

Hope you’re well and truly back into home learning after a week and a half.  I am loving all your emails; I’m reading all of them and enjoying the work you are sending in.  Something else I am enjoying is reading Slime by David Walliams.  I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure at first but it’s like being a kid again with all those yucky and rude words.  I can see now why so many of you like his books.  I may have to buy some more and keep them for Jacob when he’s older.  In the meantime, I could read them myself.

As you will see from the photos, I have made the flatbreads. A little hint for you, the dough mix was quite dry so I added a little drop of water to bring everything together, not too much though.  I am planning to make the hummus today (photos to follow) and we’ll hopefully have them both for lunch.  I’ve never made hummus before so this could be interesting.

I hope you like today’s art activity, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing my project build to the finished article.  Admittedly, I wasn’t very keen on all the stickiness but I think it’s worth it for the end result.

Definitely back to the decorating and DIY this week, weather forecast is looking a bit rubbish for a couple of days but let’s hope the sunshine is just around the corner.

Keep well and safe everybody, I’ll catch up with you on Friday morning.

As always, I will be starting my day with PE with Joe. Yesterday, I did the session at school with Mr Woolley, Mrs Lambert and the children who were in - we were all very hot and tired by the end!!

Maths

Today is Wednesday, which is your Beat That challenge day. You might still have one left in your pack, if so, work through this. If you have run out, send me an email (remember to let me know which one you need) and I can send one through to you. Give yourself two minutes to complete the challenge. Then, if an adult is free, you could ask them to kindly mark it for you, or you could mark it yourself using a calculator.

Year 5

Today you are going to be continuing with your work on Percentages. Go to the White Rose Maths Home Learning Year 5 website and find Week 2, Lesson 5 which is called ‘Equivalent FDP’ which means Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. Watch the video and work through the worksheet. I have attached the answers so you can check your work.

If you want a challenge, the sheet below has three of the pink problem questions we often do at the end of a lesson. The answers are available too so you can check your work.

Year 6

Today you are going to be continuing to work on scale factors from yesterday. Go to the White Rose Maths Home Learning Year 6 website and find Week 2, Lesson 2 which is called ‘Ratio and Proportion Problems’. Watch the video and work through the worksheet. I have attached the answers so you can check your work. Some of the questions are quite tricky today, so just try your best. Think about whether you can draw a picture or a bar model to help you work out the answers.

If you want an extra challenge, have a go at the extra sheet below. Make sure you read the problem carefully and explain your reasoning clearly.

English

Remember to make an entry into your diary/journal at some point today.

Today, start by reading back through your work from yesterday and then finish writing it. Remember to look back at your plan and check that you have included everything from it.

Once you have finished writing it, use the rest of the time to check, edit and improve your writing.

Here are some of the things we often think about/do in class during our editing sessions:

  • Check spellings - remember there are dictionaries online you can use or you can ask Siri and it can spell words for you!
  • Check punctuation - have you got a capital letter and full stop in every sentence. Have you got a comma if you used a list, started with a fronted adverbial or started your sentence with a subordinate clause (If, when, because, as). If you have done a fact page and your subheadings are questions, have you put a question mark? If you are doing a newspaper report and you have included a quote, have you put it in quotation marks?
  • Are there any words you are not happy with and that you could improve with a thesaurus? There are thesauruses available online you can use.
  • Have you remembered to break up your ideas into paragraphs if you are doing a newspaper report, or clear sections if you are writing a fact page?
  • If you possibly can, ask someone to listen to you read your work out loud. You will be able to spot your own mistakes then, but the listener can also tell you if anything doesn't make sense or could be improved further.
As it is Wednesday, Mrs Kimble has sent you a SPAG challenge. She was really pleased last week to receive some work from you. If you do the challenge, email it to me and I will forward it onto her. The photo will make sense if you complete the task!

Topic

Today, Mrs Soley has planned a really interesting Greek art mosaic project for you. I hope you enjoy doing it smiley

Spellings and Reading

Make sure you practise your spelling sentences ready for your test on Friday and do some independent reading of a book of your choice.
