Tuesday 22nd April

Good morning Class Four.

I hope you had a good first day back at home learning yesterday and enjoyed getting back into routine. I hope you are excited about your new topic and have thought of some good questions you would like to explore? I think there might have been a few problems with the Maths Video. The White Rose resources are fantastic, so a lot of schools are using them to help with teaching Maths, therefore I think the website was just very busy. If you have difficulties with it, you could either swap and do Maths at a different point in the day, or have a go at the worksheet and see if you can do it without the video.

I had a busy day - I got up early and went for a nice walk around Lakeside in the sunshine before PE with Joe. The session was really good and he shared how much money has been raised for the NHS charities from these sessions (see picture below) which is amazing! I spent most of the day cleaning the front room. It was such a mess! Everything has been dumped in there since I moved in and when the kitchen was being fitted, it rained, so the man who was fitting it had to do all the sawing and cutting in the front room, so there was so much sawdust! I have cleaned about half of it, so have to do the other half tomorrow. The exciting thing is that I have now cleared off and cleaned my piano, so I am hoping to play it over the next few days smiley

Have a lovely day and work hard! Love Miss Olver x

You might want to start your day with PE with Joe - especially seeing as doing this helps to keep you (and me!) fit and healthy but also raises lots of money for the NHS charities.

Maths

It is Tuesday, which means Times Tables Test day. There should still be a couple of times tables tests in your pack - if so work through one of these. If not, I have added the masters to the Maths Help folder so you can find the right test if you need another one. Give yourself 5 minutes to complete the test. I have put answers to the times tables tests up in the Maths Help folder as well so you can now mark them yourself.

Year 5

Today you are going to be carrying on with your work on decimals, but moving onto rounding them. Go to the website below (White Rose Maths, Home Learning, Year 5). Choose Week 2, Lesson 1 ‘Rounding Decimals’. Watch the video, then work through the worksheet. I have attached the answer sheet so you can check your work. Today’s session starts with ‘Flashback 4’ – which is a little bit like our daily warm up that we do when you come into class.

If you have time, or want an extra challenge, try these extra problems.

Year 6

Today you will be continuing with your unit on Ratios. Go to the website below (White Rose Maths, Home Learning, Year 6). Choose Week 1, Lesson 2 ‘Ratios and Fractions’. Watch the video, then work through the worksheet. I have attached the answer sheet so you can check your work.

If you have time, or would like to try some extension questions, then have a go at the sheet below. This has 3 activities on which are similar to the pink problems we often do in class.

English

Remember to make an entry into your diary/journal at some point today.

Today, start by reading back through your recount from yesterday and then finish writing it. Remember to look back at your plan to check you have included all the information you need to tell your reader about the event.

Once you have finished writing it, use the rest of the time to check, edit and improve your writing (remember that you will be sending it to me in your email on Friday so I can have a look at it).

Here are some of the things we often think about/do in class during our editing sessions:

  • Check spellings - remember there are dictionaries online you can use or you can ask Siri and it can spell words for you!
  • Check punctuation - have you got a capital letter and full stop in every sentence. Have you got a comma if you used a list, started with a fronted adverbial or started your sentence with a subordinate clause (If, when, because, as).
  • Are there any words you are not happy with and that you could improve with a thesaurus? There are thesauruses available online you can use.
  • Have you remembered to break up your ideas into paragraphs?
  • If you possibly can, ask someone to listen to you read your work out loud. You will be able to spot your own mistakes then, but the listener can also tell you if anything doesn't make sense or could be improved further.

Topic

Today, I want you to find out where Greece is; it is a Geography focused session. For the first map task, I would like you to locate Greece on the world map. On the sheet, colour in the country of Greece and add a label. If you have a map or atlas at home, you could use this to help you. If not, these websites provide free online maps and should help you to complete the tasks.

On the second task, you need to find Greece on the continent map and also label: neighbouring countries, surrounding seas, the capital city and the islands of Crete and Rhodes.

Spellings and Reading

Make sure you practice your spelling sentences ready for your test on Friday.

Spend some time doing some independent reading of a book of your choice.
