Wednesday 13th May

Good morning Class Four,

I hope you are having a good week and enjoying the home learning so far. It looked as if many of you were having fun exploring the Greek alphabet for your topic work yesterday. Thank you to those of you who sent me photos of your messages - I have put them under my message, so see if you can decode them! If anyone else wants to share them, just email them to me and I can put them up on the website tomorrow.

I had another busy day of priming yesterday. I hate priming - it's a very slow and fiddly job and the paint is quite strong and gives you a bit of a headache. Hopefully only one more day of this to go! Flash has been such a good boy since the incident on Sunday, but Fred caught another bird yesterday crying I'm not sure what to do with him as he has two bells on his collar and he hates being kept inside when it's sunny. We will have to have another chat and I will threaten him with some time out and further grounding if he doesn't behave wink

I am quite excited about today as the rules about lockdown change slightly today. Every day, I have been walking Flash and running very early in the morning to avoid meeting anyone. It's lovely and quiet and feels very safe going out at that time, but it then means I'm stuck at the house for the rest of the day. But from today we are allowed to go out more than once a day - so Flash and I will also be able to go out for a walk later in the evening when it's quiet again. I'm sure he will love the extra time out walking.

I hope you have a good day, you have another Greek art session planned by Mrs Soley this afternoon so I'm sure you will all enjoy that.

Love Miss Olver x

Here is a message from Mrs Soley:

Happy midweek class 4,

Hope you are all enjoying your learning this week.

I hope you enjoy today’s art activity.  Mr Soley helped me with this on Sunday and I finished it on Monday.  So, don’t rush this, take your time and enjoy.  Do what you can with the resources that you have.  Remember, you won’t all have the same resources anyway so above all, have a good time with it.  Perhaps your family would like to help.

I am busy making masks for the NHS after having to buy some new thread as mine kept breaking unfortunately.  It is taking quite a lot of time but I am keen to get it done so that they can be collected and sent to a keyworker to keep them safe.

We bought a Sunday newspaper at the weekend and there was a supplement included with it.  Joe Wicks has just released a new cookery book for mums who are weaning their babies onto solid food.  There were some very delicious looking recipes included and I have chosen to make 2 of them for next week.  We will be looking forward to trying fish tacos, chickpea and mushroom burgers and I will also be making some spinach falafel.  Yum, I can’t wait.  I already have 2 of Joe’s cookbooks and we regularly eat meals from these, they are always delicious and have become family favourites.

Friday’s message will include ingredients for next week’s cookery, look out for them.

See you back here on Friday.  Enjoy the rest of your week.

Best wishes.

Mrs Soley xx

I did enjoy the new dice workout yesterday - but I'm not sure if Joe thought about the fact that there is a much higher chance of getting the middle numbers than a low or high number. There were an awful lots of burpees!

Maths

Year 5

Today you are going to be continuing with your work on decimals. Go to the White Rose Maths Home Learning Year 5 website and find Summer Term Week 2, Lesson 3 which is called ‘Adding Decimals with a different number of decimal places’. Watch the video and work through the worksheet. I have attached the answers so you can check your work.

If you have time, or want an extra challenge, have a go at the extension sheet which has 3 extra problems for you to try linked to adding decimals. These are all possibilities questions – I wonder how many possibilities you will be able to find?

Year 6

Today you are going to be continuing with your work on angles. Go to the White Rose Maths Home Learning Year 6 website and find Summer Term Week 2, Lesson 1 which is called ‘Angles in Special Quadrilaterals’. Watch the video and work through the worksheet. I have attached the answers so you can check your work. I have included an extra document showing my workings for Questions 5 and 6 in case you get a bit stuck.

If you have time, or want an extra challenge, have a go at the extension sheet which has 3 extra problems for you to try linked to angles. I’ve also included the answers so you can check your work.

English

Remember to write an entry in your diary/journal at some point today.

Today, start by reading back through your work from yesterday and then finish writing it. Remember to look back at your plan and check that you have included everything from it.

Once you have finished writing it, use the rest of the time to check, edit and improve your writing.

Here are some of the things we often think about/do in class during our editing sessions:

  • Check spellings - remember there are dictionaries online you can use or you can ask Siri and it can spell words for you!
  • Check punctuation - have you got a capital letter and full stop in every sentence. Have you got a comma if you used a list, started with a fronted adverbial or started your sentence with a subordinate clause (If, when, because, as). Have you punctuated your speech correctly with inverted commas and any other punctuation you might need?
  • Are there any words you are not happy with and that you could improve with a thesaurus? There are thesauruses available online you can use.
  • Have you remembered to break up your ideas into paragraphs?
  • If you possibly can, ask someone to listen to you read your work out loud. You will be able to spot your own mistakes then, but the listener can also tell you if anything doesn't make sense or could be improved further.

As it is Wednesday, Mrs Kimble has sent you another SPAG challenge. It was great again to see more of you having a go at this last week and sending it through for her to see. She really enjoys seeing your work and always sends some feedback for you to look at. If you do the challenge today, email it to me and I will forward it onto her.

Here is a message from Mrs Kimble:

Good Morning Class 4,

Didn’t we have some lovely sunny weather at the beginning of the long weekend? I hope you managed to get outside in your gardens to enjoy it. Did anyone have a Safe Distance street party on Friday? Mr. Kimble and I went outside at 9pm to sing “We’ll Meet Again” together with neighbours further along the road. We put bunting up along our front fence and the man next door hung a huge Union Jack between two of his trees.

We managed to do lots of work in the garden last week. I spent a great deal of time and energy digging out ground elder, a really horrible weed, from one of my flower beds and then helped Mr. Kimble to repair part of a wall at the back of our garden; it had collapsed in one of the winter storms. It’s not quite finished yet as we have to wait two or three days for the cement between the stones in each row to set.

The temperature certainly changed on Monday. It came as a bit of a shock. I’m even thinking I might have to do housework again! I must remember to be eager and enthusiastic and hop and skip and sing!

I have been really pleased that some of you have been taking up my challenges; I enjoy looking at what you send and seeing how hard you are working. I hope to see lots more of your work at the end of this week. Enjoy the rest of the week and have a good weekend. I think the weather will be warmer and sunnier by then.

Love from Mrs. Kimble.

Mrs Soley has planned another Greek art lesson for you to do this afternoon. Enjoy smiley

Spellings and Reading

Make sure you practise your spelling sentences and do some independent reading of a book of your choice.
