Preparations for the big butterfly count

In worship on Monday we talked about butterflies; how wonderful they are but how they are also in decline – and they are key indicators of healthy biodiversity … or lack of.  The children were given some identification charts at playtime and many children enjoyed spotting peacocks on the buddleia, small whites and meadow browns on the field and hedge browns near the woods. This is all in preparation for the big butterfly count, a real piece of science enquiry running between 18 July and 10 Aug that children might like to do at home. Just watch the garden for 15 mins on a sunny day and record what you see and then upload results to the website.
