Year 5 children have been taking a cycle proficiency course this week – you might have seen them arriving with bikes or out and about cycling. They worked with Hampshire Bikeability Trainers, initially on the playground to practise control. They then progressed to going out to Upham Street, to learn how to follow the highway code and safely make a push off start and negotiate hazards such as parked cars. They then cycled up and down the hill and used some of the junctions to practise how to turn left and right. This is really important learning for all of them to understand how to safely cycle as a ‘road user’ as well as really good exercise too – I’m sure they all slept well afterwards!
