Focusing on nature

This week is mental health week and we have supported this in school.  However, there is so much negative coverage around mental health in the media, children are likely to associate every mention with catastrophising events and effects.  We have therefore been very careful in the language used – that we all have times when our feelings are challenged or something causes us anxiety but most of the time we get through it and return back to a calmer place. We discussed the national theme this year of ‘nature’ as a way of helping yourself calm back to a more regulated state.  I challenged the children to try to notice something outside; to listen to the birds, explore the flowers, look for bugs or just enjoy the view and see if it helped. You might also be interested to know that our governors have recently reviewed our Mental Health and Wellbeing policy which can be found on our website together with lots of other information – under the ‘Our Curriculum’ tab look for the ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing’ page.
